Google Trends – charting diets, airlines, and more

by Hugh on December 8, 2008

I love Google Trends.  Before I throw myself into anything web-based I usually use it for keyword research, and then go about planning whichever site it is i’m thinking of working on.  In case you’ve never taken a peek before, Google Trends lets you search for keywords or keystrings, side by side, then compare search volumes.  At certain times of the year it’s always interesting to look for spikes or dips in certain keyterms, and we were discussing the merits of New Year diets.

Check out the graph below, from Google Trends for the word ‘diet‘.

Check out the massive dip right before Christmas, when people clearly have more to think about than losing weight, but come January – boom search volume shoots up!  Then it steadily goes down again throughout the year.

Another funny one is airline popularity.  Currently Ryanair are trying to buy Aer Lingus, but are being met with claims their offer undervalues Aer Lingus – lets check out Google Trends to see just how popular Ryanair are, shall we?  Ryanair = Blue, Aer Lingus = Red.

Hmmm, steady growth for Ryanair then.  At least in comparison to Aer Lingus.  Ok, so what about other competitors – like Easyjet and British Airways?

Ryanair = Blue
Aer Lingus = Red
Easyjet = Orange
British Airways = Green

Whoops, Ryanair wins again.

Just goes to show, even though we may outwardly slate certain companies for ‘bad service’ and so on, we still turn to them time and time again.
