Whilst checking out some news on Breakingnews.ie, I noticed they’ve started using Google Friend Connect to help engage with their site visitors and provide a slightly more interactive experience. Whilst this is certainly a step in the right direction, I’m just wondering if maybe they should have chosen Facebook Connect as their social platform provider of choice. Why?
Well, Facebook is becoming the place to be when it comes to social networking, with a huge migration of users from Myspace, Bebo, and others. I’m not sure how many Irish people have Gmail accounts, but even taking that into account, if users do have both Gmail and Facebook accounts, chances are they spend way more time on Facebook than Gmail, and in terms of sharing with friends, Facebook is a proper old social network – Google haven’t managed to sort a decent social network offering yet (they tried with Orkut).
What do you think? Does Facebook win over vs Gmail in terms of the time you spend using it? Would you even bother using tools like Google Friend Connect or Facebook Connect to share news stories with friends?

Facebook is really taking over, people are starting to spend more time on it than Google! It made sense for them to bring out Facebook Connect as most non-techy’s have a facebook account than anything else. OpenID was there before, but not sure how that will compete…
The point of these things is to reduce the amount of logins we use, I wish they could all just get together so we don’t all have to have a facebook, Google and OpenID account!
I think that was meant to be the point of OpenID, but only geeks really know about that or understand it…
