What an interesting day for the UK stock market.  Whilst the BBC and others have reported Marks and Spencer are set to cut around 1,000 jobs, Bloomberg has reported gains for Debenhams, Next PLC and even Marks and Spencer.  So what exactly is going on?

I’m not 100% surprised by this, as Screenclick fairly recently acquired Busybeedvd and since day one have been playing down Moviestar.ie’s presence in the Irish market (as they did with Busybeedvd), but as of today Moviestar.ie is now being fulfilled by Screenclick.com.  If you’re a regular reader you’ll have spotted my earlier opinion of the Screenclick.com website.  It now seems with this latest move i’ll have to look at other DVD rental services – unless Screenclick somehow move to Moviestar’s site.  There ain’t no way in hell i’m going to use the new look Screenclick.com.

Maybe if they listened to feedback and actually acted on it i’d be in a better position to continue using their service.

Farting can make you $30,000 a day

by Hugh on January 6, 2009

Well, you can’t really make money from farting – not real ones at least.  But a clever chap in the states recently raked in almost $30,000 USD in one day by selling his ‘iFart‘ application for the Apple iPhone.  Clever boy.  But such a stupidly simple idea.  And on which exact one day in 2008 did the developer Joel Comm make the equivalent of a years salary for some?  Yup, Christmas day.  Looks like the days of the whoopee cushion inside the Christmas cracker are numbered if the iPhone’s soaring sales and apps such as this are anything to go by.

Check out the vid below for a great example of what the iFart application can do to make your life more productive:

Facebook annoy breastfeeding mums

by Hugh on December 29, 2008

Via Mashable, here’s a story which has probably gone a little bit too far over in the states due to a lack of Christmas time news.  A group of mums have staged a protest outside Facebook‘s offices in Palo Alto, California, due to some images of breastfeeding mums being removed from the site.  Why?  Facebook’s policy is to remove any pictures of breasts where the nipple or areola is on display.  As of today, over 75,000 mums have joined the Facebook group campaigning against the ban.

In the run up to Christmas 2008, the news was full of doom and gloom about Irish retailing.  The Brits changed their VAT rate which went down, ours went up, and we were fed stories of hard done by consumers rushing up to Newry in droves to do their Christmas shopping.  Irish retailers shouted loud, some blaming the Irish Government for the crisis in the retail sector, and reporting a 5% drop in the retail sector in 2008.  But is it as simple as that?  Has the retail downturn really come as a shock, or shouldn’t the retail sector have been predicting this anyway?

I meant to blog about this before, but almost a month ago I had the pleasure of having laser eye surgery to correct the vision in my eyes.  I’d been a speccy since the age of around ten and in some ways did really enjoy wearing glasses (they make me look more intelligent than I really am), but I had a rather wierd contact lens subscription.  Not only were my contact lenses more than double the normal price than ‘regular’ prescriptions, I had to order them in advance from the opticians, meaning that on some occasions I had to go without contact lenses when delays occured.  Add to that the nasty habit of falling asleep with them in after a few drinks on a night out, and you’ll soon realise I was a recipe for disaster when it came to being a contact lens wearer.

O2 and Perlico playing fair with decent CPAs

by Hugh on December 18, 2008

I like it when programs launch and CPAs have been determined well from the off.  Two recent additions to Tradedoubler IrelandO2 and Perlico – have pretty much nailed it on the head with their initial offer CPAs to affiliate publishers who drive sales.  No doubt it was a big step for both these providers to take the leap into affiliate marketing in Ireland, and I really hope their efforts are being paid off handsomely.  So what makes a good CPA offer for affiliates?  Why are some programs more appealing than others?

Following my post yesterday about Screenclick and the possible effect their recent changes may make to affiliate earnings, they’ve taken the very mature approach to my unease – they’ve banned me from being an affiliate with them anymore.  That just leaves Moviestar on the Compare.ie DVD rental comparison page then.  My post, along with Micheles (also a Screenclick affiliate – has he been banned I wonder) provoked some debate about the issue, particularly on Micheles Blog.  Alas their response to it all?  Just to simply ban the very affiliates who promote their product on the basis that they’ll be compensated when users actually sign up to the service.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a tree or have been in a coma, you’ll have noticed a lot of airplay for Leonard Cohens‘ Hallelujah.  Or is that Jeff Buckley?  X Factor winner Alexandra Burke used the song to help her win the talent competition last weekend, and the mp3 download charts have gone crazy with people looking for her version, the original Cohen version, and Buckley version.  Are people confused and buying the wrong version (no doubt the younger generation would be looking for the Burke version), or are younger listeners learning about old musical gems due to a cover version by a new artist?
