I went onto the excellent Polldaddy earlier to create a poll for Compare.ie, and found it was pretty much ‘down’. I couldn’t log in, and kept coming back again and again without success, until about 7pm GMT. Now the reason is clear, today Automattic announced their acquisition of Polldaddy, and it is fantastic news for Irish Internet companies. Why? Polldaddy was conceived, and is based, in Sligo!

I’ve been at this interweb stuff for about 12 years or so now, and i’ve seen a lot of changes, especially in the Irish hosting market. From a few bit players a several years ago the industry has grown in leaps and bounds, and it’s now cheaper than ever to get your email, website, and even file storage and collaboration tools sorted. So who have I tried over the years, and what do I think of them? Here goes!

It’s hard to believe that a company worth billions and taking on the might of Microsoft for tech domination is less than ten years old but hey, that’s the technology revolution for ya. Google are kicking off their tenth year celebrations with the launch of a cool little microsite which includes a timeline showing the development of Google.

Apologies for the excitedly American title but i’ve just been subjected to two weeks of over the top smiling, tip hungry barmen, casino dealers, parking attendants, and hotel staff. I’ve also had the pleasure of flying with Virgin America on a domestic flight from LAX (Los Angeles) to SFO (San Francisco International), and it was bleedin deadly.

I’ve been djing on and off for about… 12 years now, since I was about 15 or 16 and, from my time learning on Kam belt drive decks and a shite two channel mixer, i’ve seen some real crap come on the market that is meant to appeal to djs. I actually gave up djing a few years ago because it had gone slightly overboard and I lost faith in the gorges of total shite that came on the scene to ‘help’ djs, but this one really takes the mick. Mixedinkey.com apparently allows you to ‘mix in key’, which is allegedly ‘innovative and fresh’.

I’ve been quiet for the last two weeks as i’ve been on the West coast of the USA with my buddy Joe checking out San Fran, San Diego, Huntington Beach (shite and full of wankers), and L.A. We also did a three day trip to Vegas which was… tiring but worth it! Had a few ideas / eureka moments when I was over there, so i’ll be back to regular blogging when I get my shit together here in the office.
We get advertising orders in at a decent pace, but as fate would have it the first day I went away, double the amount arrived in. Typical, but good!

I meant to blog about this ages ago (years in fact), but I’m a scatty brained lazy arse who clearly forgot. I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to statistics of all shapes and sizes – be it daily website traffic reports from Google Analytics, or checking up on how any of our servers are performing. I’m especially nerdy with new sites I launch, checking in more often than usual to see where i’m getting traffic from, what content is working best, and so on. But one thing that amuses me more than most is the weather factor.

Never a nation to ever pat anyone on the back and say ‘well done’, i’m not surprised to see that some Irish begrudgers have defaced the Wikipedia page of Dublin band ‘The Script’. This is pretty representative of the general Irish attitude to anyone who has some level of success, be it in business, music, or sport. No wonder the boys have pissed off to London to further their careers.
Anyway, fair play to them. Their music wouldn’t be at the very top of the pile for me, but they’re excellent songwriters and producers, and deserve every bit of success they get. The Wikipedia page is here, and in before someone changes it back to normality, below is a screenshot of the handiwork of a begrudgering Irish scrote.

Well here we go again. I’m back blogging, and I DO intend to be more frequent in my updates than before.
I’m going to use this blog to:
- Blabber on about what i’m upto
- Tell the world about new ventures i’m involved in
- Rant about stuff
- Big-up things, services, and people I think are cool
If you’ve anything you’d like to talk to me about, get in touch by posting a comment on my about me page.
