Richard Branson – Business Stripped Bare

by Hugh on September 23, 2008

I normally shun those boring businessey books with titles like ‘How to make millons the easy way’ and those ‘Rich daddy’ ones, but i’m not adverse to buying biographical accounts of how various businesspeople got to where they are today.  I’ve been catching up on some reading lately, and am a third of the way through the newest book about Michael O’Leary (there are several), but when I checked out Richard Branson’s blog I couldn’t resist buying his latest book.

Where can I get an Apple iPhone 3G?

by Hugh on September 23, 2008

I’m a bit of a mess when it comes to phones – i’m always breaking them, changing them, and complaining about them.  My recent foray with a Samsung for the first time didn’t go well, and I ended up going back to the ever reliable, but sometimes annoying Nokia.  I’ve had some fun in the past with the Blackberry, before the jogwheel on my first one broke, and I didn’t get much enjoyment out of the nipple on its successor.  I want an Apple iPhone 3G, but can’t seem to find them anywhere.  O2 seem pretty much permanently out of stock, so where else can I get one, without being ripped off… any suggestions?

Tradedoubler Ireland seem to have been focussing on a particular vertical of late, and it seems the fruits of their labours are being paid off.  Carphone Warehouse have already launched on the network, and O2 are coming soon, with a launch party for the program coming up in the next few weeks.  So what are my inital thoughts on it?  Whilst it’s good that big brands like these are trying affiliate marketing in Ireland, some elements of the equation just don’t add up.

Virgin America – Frickin Awesome!

by Hugh on September 21, 2008

Apologies for the excitedly American title but i’ve just been subjected to two weeks of over the top smiling, tip hungry barmen, casino dealers, parking attendants, and hotel staff.  I’ve also had the pleasure of flying with Virgin America on a domestic flight from LAX (Los Angeles) to SFO (San Francisco International), and it was bleedin deadly.

Mixedinkey – fuck me what a dreadful idea

by Hugh on September 21, 2008

I’ve been djing on and off for about… 12 years now, since I was about 15 or 16 and, from my time learning on Kam belt drive decks and a shite two channel mixer, i’ve seen some real crap come on the market that is meant to appeal to djs.  I actually gave up djing a few years ago because it had gone slightly overboard and I lost faith in the gorges of total shite that came on the scene to ‘help’ djs, but this one really takes the mick.  Mixedinkey.com apparently allows you to ‘mix in key’, which is allegedly ‘innovative and fresh’.

I’ve been quiet for the last two weeks as i’ve been on the West coast of the USA with my buddy Joe checking out San Fran, San Diego, Huntington Beach (shite and full of wankers), and L.A.  We also did a three day trip to Vegas which was… tiring but worth it!  Had a few ideas / eureka moments when I was over there, so i’ll be back to regular blogging when I get my shit together here in the office.

We get advertising orders in at a decent pace, but as fate would have it the first day I went away, double the amount arrived in.  Typical, but good!

I meant to blog about this ages ago (years in fact), but I’m a scatty brained lazy arse who clearly forgot.  I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to statistics of all shapes and sizes – be it daily website traffic reports from Google Analytics, or checking up on how any of our servers are performing.  I’m especially nerdy with new sites I launch, checking in more often than usual to see where i’m getting traffic from, what content is working best, and so on.  But one thing that amuses me more than most is the weather factor.

Never a nation to ever pat anyone on the back and say ‘well done’, i’m not surprised to see that some Irish begrudgers have defaced the Wikipedia page of Dublin band ‘The Script’.  This is pretty representative of the general Irish attitude to anyone who has some level of success, be it in business, music, or sport.  No wonder the boys have pissed off to London to further their careers.

Anyway, fair play to them.  Their music wouldn’t be at the very top of the pile for me, but they’re excellent songwriters and producers, and deserve every bit of success they get.  The Wikipedia page is here, and in before someone changes it back to normality, below is a screenshot of the handiwork of a begrudgering Irish scrote.

Affiliate Networks – Sell Your Wares!

by Hugh on August 25, 2008

I thought it might be interesting to invite UK and Internationally based affiliate networks to ‘sell your wares’.  Affiliate marketing is still in its infancy in Ireland – for no good reason – so perhaps if you could respond below with your details, it might be a handy point of reference for Irish ecommerce retailers to give affiliate marketing a closer look.

For those of you who don’t know the Irish market, we ARE in fact huge spenders online – people outside of Ireland seem to think we’re in the dark ages and are scared of buying online.  We’re not, so don’t let that be a reason for you to ignore us!

I’ve been watching with interest the ‘under the radar’ launches of some new Irish online advertising sales houses.  For as long as i’d care to remember, the Irish market consisted of just two main players, Sales Online and GeneratorAd2-One launched an Irish office here in Dublin in 2005, but they seemed to lose their way after the loss of a key member of staff.  Sales Online and Generator have been squabbling for the same clients for quite some time now, Generator losing Eircom to Sales Online earlier this year, and some other ‘musical chairs’ type deals.  But now we have some serious competitors in the marketplace, with the arrival if i-Believe, Tradedoubler Ireland, and Electric Media.
